USS Portsmouth

The second USS Portsmouth was a wooden sloop-of-war in the United States Navy, serving in the mid-to-late 19th century. Designed by Josiah Barker, she was modeled after a French-built privateer and constructed at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, located across the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Portsmouth was considered an improvement over the USS Saratoga, which had been built at the same shipyard a year earlier. She was launched on October 23, 1843, and commissioned on November 10, 1844, with Commander John Berrien Montgomery at the helm.

John S. Johnston (c.1839 – December 17, 1899) was a notable maritime and landscape photographer of the late 19th century, renowned for his images of racing yachts and New York City landmarks and cityscapes. Though details of his life remain scarce, it is believed he was born in Britain in the late 1830s and was active in the New York City area during the late 1880s and 1890s. Johnston passed away in 1899. His photographs were featured in prominent periodicals of the 1890s, including Outing magazine and Forest and Stream (now Field and Stream), which often highlighted yacht racing.
