The Rainbow | Ivan Aivazovsky | 1873

Ivan Aivazovsky’s The Rainbow, painted in 1873, brings the vulnerability of a shipwrecked crew into direct confrontation with the force of the sea. A crowded open boat rises on luminous green water, while a stricken sailing vessel emerges through the mist beyond. Diagonal waves and wind-driven spray give the composition its restless movement; the faint rainbow introduces a quieter note within the storm. The painting is a compelling example of Aivazovsky’s Romantic seascapes, in which atmosphere, light and the struggle for survival are inseparable.
