The Battle of Navarino | Ambroise Louis Garneray | 1827–1830

Ambroise Louis Garneray presents the Battle of Navarino as a vast panorama of ships, shoreline and drifting gun smoke. The measured foreground opens onto the crowded bay, where the scale of the opposing fleets unfolds beneath the mountains of the Peloponnese. The painting depicts the engagement of 20 October 1827, when British, French and Russian forces confronted the Ottoman–Egyptian fleet during the Greek War of Independence. Garneray’s experience at sea informs his close attention to hulls, sails and rigging, while the luminous sky gives the scene a remarkable sense of distance.
