This dramatic painting captures the chaos of the Battle of Lissa, the decisive naval engagement of the Third Italian War of Independence. Fought on 20 July 1866, the Austro-Hungarian fleet achieved a remarkable victory over the larger Italian navy through bold tactics, including the use of ramming attacks. Volanakis vividly conveys the confusion and violence of the battle, with towering warships, smoke-filled skies, and sailors struggling amid the wreckage, creating a powerful tribute to one of the nineteenth century's most significant naval battles.
