Spanish and Dutch Engagement | Cornelis Verbeeck | 1630

This painting depicts a naval battle between Spanish and Dutch ships, with a small yacht on the left flying the States General flag. A Dutch ship, shown in starboard-bow view, engages a larger vessel behind it, likely Spanish, with gunfire. Figures on deck include a man blowing a trumpet and another brandishing a sword. To the right, a Dutch flagship, possibly the 'Haarlem,' engages another ship in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The Spanish opponent, in the foreground, flies a red diagonal cross flag, likely from the Spanish Netherlands. Wreckage and distant ships are visible.

The battle may represent an event from the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), though it was once mistakenly linked to the Battle of the Downs in 1639. The artist, born and died in Haarlem, is thought to have been a pupil of Hendrick Vroom, a pioneer of marine painting. His monogram 'C.V.B.H.' appears on the Dutch flagship’s mainmast.
