This painting, Portrait of Peter Pett and the Sovereign of the Seas by Sir Peter Lely, is a 17th-century work showcasing the prominent English shipbuilder Peter Pett alongside one of his most famous creations, the Sovereign of the Seas. The composition blends maritime power and personal achievement: Pett is depicted standing beside a rocky shore, dressed in black with a composed expression, while the ornately decorated stern of the warship dominates the left side of the canvas. The ship, flying the English flag, symbolizes naval strength and the grandeur of the English fleet under King Charles I. Lely’s style captures both the majesty of the ship and the quiet authority of Pett.
