This 19th century painting by Thomas Buttersworth (1768–1842) portrays an adventurous seascape featuring a dramatic night chase. The artwork depicts a smuggler's ship being pursued by a brig across dark, turbulent waves. The scene is illuminated dramatically by light piercing through tempestuous clouds, heightening the sense of urgency and danger. In the background, coastal features possibly related to the British Channel coast are visible. A fire on the beach indicates further raid-related activity. This painting caters to the contemporary audience’s taste for romantic and adventurous narratives, much like the literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
