A third-rate, two-decker, 74-gun warship is depicted on the left side of the image, flying the red ensign and a private pennant as it enters Port Mahon harbour. This type of ship could have served in a line of battle, operated as an independent cruiser, or acted as the flagship of a small squadron. In this scene, the ship is hove-to, barely moving, as it drops a boat that is ferrying two naval officers to the quayside on the right. The boat, also flying the red ensign, is manned by a smartly uniformed crew, indicating it may be transporting the captain ashore. Behind the warship, other vessels are anchored near the harbour entrance. In the foreground, various small craft can be seen, including a rowing boat on the left with a man holding a net over the water. In the central foreground, a felucca, a narrow and swift lateen-rigged sailing vessel common in the Mediterranean, approaches a small landing stage. The buildings of the port are visible on the right, with the 18th-century lazaretto or hospital to the left. The artist has included detailed elements of daily life, such as laundry hanging on a line, a woman carrying a basket on her head, a man fishing, and locals dressed in traditional attire. This composition is notable for its large scale, a departure for an artist more commonly known for smaller paintings in the Dutch style, and stylistically it bridges the 18th and 19th centuries.
