Loss of the Royal George | John Christian Schetky | 1840

John Christian Schetky’s Loss of the Royal George depicts the catastrophe at Spithead on 29 August 1782, when the first-rate warship capsized while being heeled for work on her hull. The overturned ship dominates the water as small boats gather around the wreck, setting individual rescue efforts against the scale of the disaster. Exhibited in 1840, Schetky’s painting approaches the event through a carefully organised marine panorama, balancing the crowded foreground with distant shipping and a broad, atmospheric sky.
