Figurehead of 'Le Sans-Culotte', Revolutionary French Warship, circa 1795 (watercolour drawing). This detailed starboard profile depicts the figurehead of the French Revolutionary vessel Sans-Culotte, embodying a fusion of political symbolism and classical ideals. The central figure, representing the Jacobin sans-culotte, is rendered in a Romanized toga and equipped with a fasces and Herculean club—clear references to Republican virtue and strength drawn from antiquity. Despite this classical presentation, his 18th-century footwear and the red bonnet rouge firmly anchor him in the iconography of the French Revolution. The composition reflects the Revolutionary tendency to merge myth, ideology, and national identity in maritime ornamentation.
