This painting depicts a dramatic moment during the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797, where HMS Victory, the flagship of Admiral Sir John Jervis, is shown delivering a powerful raking broadside against the Spanish warship Salvador del Mundo. Victory fires from a strategic position, sending smoke billowing across the scene, while Salvador del Mundo bears the brunt of the attack, its sails and hull visibly impacted.

The battle was a key engagement in the conflict between Britain and Spain during the French Revolutionary Wars, demonstrating British naval superiority. The formation of ships in the background illustrates the scale of the battle, with multiple ships exchanging broadsides under a turbulent sky. Flags and banners wave amidst the smoke, conveying the intensity and chaos of the encounter. The composition captures the might of the British navy, with Victory at the forefront, asserting dominance in the choppy waters of the Atlantic near Cape St Vincent.
