The cutting out of the Hermione by HMS Surprise on the night of October 24, 1799, remains one of the most daring naval operations of the Age of Sail. The Hermione, a former British frigate captured in a brutal mutiny in 1797 and delivered to the Spanish at La Guaira, was anchored under heavy guard in the fortified harbor of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Captain Edward Hamilton of HMS Surprise led a stealthy nighttime boarding assault with around 100 men in small boats. Despite intense musket and cannon fire from shore batteries, Hamilton’s force stormed the Hermione, overcame fierce resistance on deck, and succeeded in cutting her cables and sailing her out of the harbor. The British suffered surprisingly few casualties, and Hamilton was later knighted for his extraordinary bravery. The recaptured vessel was recommissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Retribution, marking a rare and celebrated triumph of audacity over overwhelming odds.
