HMS Erebus in the Ice, 1846. This oil painting by Belgian marine artist François Etienne Musin (1820–1888) depicts HMS Erebus during its ill-fated Arctic expedition under Sir John Franklin in 1845. Equipped with a steam engine and screw propeller, Erebus was accompanied by HMS Terror, both of which were abandoned in the ice by 1848. Musin portrays the ship surrounded by icebergs but still navigating open water. A dim sky casts limited sunlight, creating a dramatic, stage-like effect. In the foreground, crew members are seen transporting small boats across the ice, highlighting their struggle in the harsh environment.
