The painting portrays the ship 'Britannia', a 120-gun warship, showcasing her stern with her name emblazoned. She is flying the white ensign and the pre-1850 tricolour pennant, with her anchor raised. Figures are visible on the deck and in the rigging. The Mediterranean coastline features a rocky outcrop in the left foreground and cliffs with grassy headlands on the right. A ruined tower, a fort, and a church are depicted on the cliff, with the coastline extending into the distance. Another warship is anchored in the harbour, shown in port-broadside view, along with other vessels, including a lateen-rigged ship in the middle distance. Built in 1820, 'Britannia' was stationed in the Mediterranean between 1830-32 and again in 1835, possibly depicting the coastline of Malta. The artist, who learned to paint while serving in the Royal Navy, later pursued painting professionally, focusing on Royal Naval subjects.
