Capture of the ‘Gypsy’, 30 April 1812. The American schooner Gypsy, outfitted as a privateer and en route from New York to Bordeaux with a valuable cargo, was seized in the mid-Atlantic after a three-day pursuit. In the left foreground, the Belle Poule is shown in starboard broadside view. To the right, just off her port bow, the Gypsy is still returning fire even as her ensign is being lowered in surrender. In the right background, the Hermes appears in port bow view. For dramatic emphasis, the artist has depicted the chase amid stormy seas, dark clouds, and turbulent waves.
