This dramatic scene depicts the Battle of Gibraltar, fought on 25 April 1607 during the Eighty Years’ War, when the Dutch Republic launched a devastating surprise attack against the Spanish fleet anchored in the Bay of Gibraltar. Led by the Dutch admiral Jacob van Heemskerck, a smaller but highly aggressive Dutch squadron sailed directly into the heavily defended harbour and engaged the larger Spanish force at close range.

At the centre of the battle stands the catastrophic destruction of the Spanish flagship San Agustín, struck amidships by a Dutch vessel and engulfed in a violent explosion that tore through the ship, hurling men, debris, sails, and rigging into the air. The blast became one of the most dramatic moments of the engagement. Though Admiral van Heemskerck was killed during the battle, the Dutch achieved a decisive victory, destroying or capturing much of the Spanish fleet.

Painted by Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen (1575–1633), the work captures the chaos and spectacle of early modern naval warfare: crowded waters filled with towering warships, cannon smoke, flames, drowning sailors, and desperate rescue boats. More than a battle scene, it is a vivid celebration of Dutch naval power and one of the most famous maritime victories of the Dutch Golden Age.
