The Battle of Diu, fought on February 3, 1509, was a pivotal naval engagement in the Arabian Sea between the Portuguese Empire and a coalition of forces including the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, the Gujarat Sultanate, and the Zamorin of Calicut, with support from the Ottoman Empire. Taking place near the port of Diu on India’s western coast, the battle marked a decisive Portuguese victory, establishing their dominance over the Indian Ocean trade routes. This confrontation not only weakened Muslim naval power in the region but also solidified Portugal’s emergence as a major maritime and colonial force during the Age of Exploration.
