The painting shows English and French ships engaged in battle. The English ship is likely the St David, though it's uncertain whether the scene represents the Battle of Bantry Bay or another conflict from the War of the English Succession. The artist’s identity is also uncertain, with Adriaen van Diest and Willem van de Velde the Younger both considered possible creator.
