Napoleon on the Bellerophon | Charles Lock Eastlake | 1815

This painting, "Napoleon Bonaparte on Board the 'Bellerophon' in Plymouth Sound" (1815) by Charles Lock Eastlake, depicts Napoleon after his final defeat at Waterloo. Shown in the uniform of the Chasseurs de la Garde, he stands on the deck of HMS Bellerophon, having surrendered to Captain Maitland while seeking asylum after the collapse of his rule during the Hundred Days. Napoleon hoped for mercy from the British but was instead held aboard the ship off Plymouth, under close watch. His calm yet solemn pose captures a moment of lost power and uncertain fate. He would soon be exiled to Saint Helena, where he lived out the remainder of his life.

Eastlake painted the scene from life as a young artist witnessing history firsthand, portraying Napoleon not as a conqueror but as a fallen figure facing the twilight of his ambitions.
