Gathering Storm | Ivan Aivazovsky | 1899

Ivan Aivazovsky’s Gathering Storm, painted in 1899, captures the unsettled interval before rough weather breaks at sea. Darkening cloud and shifting light give the water a restless depth, while the vessels appear small within the expanse of sky and sea. The composition draws its drama from atmosphere rather than incident: distant forms soften into haze, and the changing surface of the water carries the eye towards the horizon. It is a late example of Aivazovsky’s sustained attention to light, movement and the vulnerability of ships at sea.
