Combat de la Poursuivante contre l’Hercule (1803) depicts the dramatic action of 28 June 1803, when the French frigate Poursuivante engaged the much larger British ship HMS Hercule off the coast of Saint-Domingue. The scene captures Poursuivante raking the British vessel with cannon fire, clouds of gun smoke rising between the ships beneath a luminous Caribbean sky. The contrast between the tranquil landscape and the violence at sea gives the work a striking sense of drama and grandeur.
