The Splendid Naval Triumph on the Mississippi, April 24, 1862. Published by Currier & Ives, 1862 (coloured lithograph).

This dramatic print depicts the Union Navy’s assault on Confederate forces along the Mississippi River under Flag Officer David Farragut. Fought between 18–25 April 1862, the attack led to the capture of Forts Jackson and St. Philip and ultimately New Orleans. Confederate gunboats, ironclads, fire rafts, and river defences were destroyed as the night sky blazed with flames, smoke, and exploding shells.

Identified vessels include USS Cayuga (leading the Union column), USS Pensacola, USS Varuna, USS Oneida, USS Mississippi (engaging the ram Manassas), USS Richmond, USS Kineo, USS Hartford (Farragut’s flagship, shown entangled with a fire raft), USS Brooklyn, and USS Winona, alongside Confederate steamers and burning vessels. Fort St. Philip appears to the right and Fort Jackson to the left, framing the fiery chaos of the battle.
