Daybreak after the Bombardment of a Port by Spanish Ships, c.1628. This painting captures the aftermath of a Spanish naval assault at dawn. The harbor lies in smoke and flames on the left, while Spanish warships dominate the calm waters in the foreground. A boat filled with soldiers approaches a large vessel at anchor, as another ship readies to depart. The rising sun bathes the scene in a golden glow, with a faint crescent moon still visible above, evoking both destruction and uneasy stillness.
