This 19th century Chinese School painting vividly depicts a trading junk caught in a fierce storm. The vessel, its tattered sails and tilting hull battling towering waves, is set against a dramatic sky where dark storm clouds contrast with patches of blue.

Richly detailed, the junk’s ornate wooden paneling and striking red prow highlight traditional Chinese craftsmanship. In the distance, a Western-style ship suggests the growing influence of foreign maritime forces. The dynamic brushwork and interplay of light and shadow reflect both Western realism and Eastern artistic sensibilities, making this piece a compelling blend of tradition and change.
