Queen Victoria’s Visit to HMS Queen at Portsmouth, March 1, 1842. Painting by Robert Strickland Thomas (1787–1853).

This painting captures an event from March 1, 1842, during Queen Victoria's visit to Portsmouth. Accompanied by her husband, Prince Albert, she was joined by the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and his sons, Prince Augustus and Prince Leopold, along with the Duke of Wellington and other dignitaries. The royal party toured Spithead aboard the steamer Black Eagle before visiting HMS Queen, a 110-gun warship serving as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir E. Owen. The painting depicts his red flag flying from the mainmast, alongside the red ensign, the Union flag, and the Royal Standard.
