Nelson Boarding the San Josef (1829) by George Jones depicts the British Royal Navy's boarding and capture of the Spanish ship San Josef during the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. The scene highlights Horatio Nelson's pivotal role, foreshadowing his later victories at the Nile and Trafalgar.
Commissioned by the British Institution for £500 to promote history painting, it was displayed at their 1829 exhibition. Jones, a former army officer and Royal Academy member, was known for military scenes, including The Battle of Vittoria and The Battle of Waterloo. Now housed in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
