A Ketch-Rigged Royal Yacht in a Breeze. In the early 18th century, many smack-rigged royal yachts were converted to ketch rig, with new ones being built in this style. Nearly twenty yachts served the crown, ferrying royalty, government officials, and other dignitaries, often from Greenwich on the Thames, where the Royal Hospital for Seamen provided a grand setting for their departures and arrivals. The yacht depicted is possibly the 'Portsmouth,' flying the red ensign, a Union Jack on the bowsprit, and a commissioning pennant. The royal coat of arms is carved on the stern, with other ships visible in the distance.
