Size: 12"x8"

A dramatic maritime painting depicts a Scandinavian frigate battling rough seas and strong onshore winds as it struggles to avoid being driven onto a rocky coast—an action known as "clawing off" a lee shore. Likely set off the coast of Norway, the vessel is shown dangerously close to the rocks, observed by a small fishing boat to the left. A lighthouse stands on the headland, with towering mountains in the background.

Painted by Danish artist W. Melby in 1858, this work reflects his expertise in marine scenes. Melby exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1867.
