On the left side of the scene, an English ship is fiercely engaged in battle with a 'Barbary' ship and two galleys. The sky is filled with smoke, and the flashes of gunfire, reflected in the sea, illuminate the sails and flags of the vessels. In the left foreground, the front section of the Barbary ship is heavily damaged, listing to port, and appears to be on fire midship. A small boat on its port bow is rescuing survivors. Further beyond, the masts of another ship are visible as it explodes. On the right, a galley is sinking, with another galley behind it, viewed from the starboard quarter. The masts and sails of three more galleys rise above the smoke. In the center background, above the haze, a Barbary ship with a flag at the mainmast is listing to starboard. To the left, a large English two-decker, seen from the port quarter, is heavily engaged with Barbary ships on both sides. The two-decker flies a Union flag at the mizzen and a red pennant at the main, possibly signaling for assistance. The Barbary corsairs, who operated from the major coastal cities of North Africa, were the target of naval expeditions by various European nations from the seventeenth century onward.
