Battle of Negapatam, 6 July 1782. This painting depicts the third of five naval battles between the French and British East Indies squadrons during the American War of Independence. Fought off the coast of India, it saw Admiral Pierre-André de Suffren face off against Sir Edward Hughes in a fiercely contested engagement.

At Negapatam, the French Brilliant suffered 47 killed and 136 wounded, while the captain of Sévère attempted to surrender but was overruled by his lieutenant. The British lost 77 killed and 233 wounded, and the French 178 killed and 600 wounded. The artwork captures an early phase of the battle with both fleets in formation—British ships on the left, led by Commodore King in Hero, and Hughes in Superb fifth in line. The French, on the right, are led by Suffren in Héros, also fifth in formation. A frigate is visible in the distant background.
