This painting compresses multiple moments of the battle into a single dramatic scene. Nelson’s famous “England expects…” signal flies from Victory, the mizzenmast is shown collapsing, the Achille burns in the distance, and the Redoutable sinks amid the chaos in the foreground. Though visually powerful, Turner takes artistic liberties—depicting the signal flags from the main mast rather than the mizzen, and keeping them raised even after they would have been replaced as the battle intensified.
