The USS Lancaster, seen in this 1899 photo at anchor, was a screw sloop-of-war launched in 1858 and commissioned in 1859, featuring both tall masts and a steam funnel—symbolizing the transition from sail to steam power. She served with distinction during the American Civil War as part of the Union blockade and later operated as flagship for various naval squadrons, including the South Atlantic and European Squadrons. In her later years, Lancaster was repurposed as a training and receiving ship, stationed at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine. After a long and varied career, she was decommissioned in 1913.
