Legrand’s painting blends romanticism and heroism, portraying Admiral Nelson’s ascent to immortality after his death at Trafalgar in 1805. Depicted rising toward Olympus, Nelson is received by Neptune and crowned by Fame, symbolizing his lasting legacy. Below, grieving sailors witness his ascent, while Britannia mourns on the left, embodying Britain’s sorrow. Surrounding gods, including Mars, Hercules, and Minerva, highlight his courage and wisdom. Jupiter presides above, reinforcing Nelson’s divine status. The composition, rich in allegory, honors Nelson’s virtues, though an error in depicting his lost arm was corrected in a later 1818 version.
