This fine 17th century painting depicts two English ships sailing in heavy conditions. Painted by Willem van de Velde the Younger, who was born on the 18th December 1633 and was a Dutch marine painter, the son of Willem van de Velde the Elder, who also specialised in maritime art. His brother, Adriaen van de Velde, was also a landscape painter. Most of Willem Van de Velde's II finest works represent views off the coast of Holland, with Dutch shipping.
