Painted in 1836 by Charles Louis Mozin, "The French Cavalry Take the Battle Fleet Caught in the Ice in the Waters of Texel, 21 January 1795" commemorates one of the most unusual episodes of the French Revolutionary Wars. During an exceptionally severe winter, a Dutch fleet lay frozen and immobilized in the icy waters near Texel in the Netherlands. Taking advantage of this extraordinary circumstance, French cavalry and supporting troops advanced across the ice and forced the helpless ships to surrender—an almost unique event in military history, in which mounted soldiers captured a naval fleet. Mozin’s composition emphasizes the surreal meeting of land and sea warfare, with horsemen, artillery, and infantry moving across the frozen surface toward the towering ships, transforming this remarkable historical incident into a dramatic and monumental vision of winter, war, and revolutionary victory.
